Champions Celebrate
We at Premier Vegas boldly stated midway through the season that the 2023 Aces were the best women’s basketball team in history. Reflecting on the season and the path to another championship title, we can confidently say – we were right!
Season and Playoff Recap
The injuries were piling up during the playoffs, to the point where the Aces were six-point underdogs for ame 4 of the WNBA championship series. They powered through and ended up winning the title without superstars Candace Parker and Chelsea Gray.
It was a night to remember as 6th Women of the Year award winner, Alysha Clark, and other members of the ‘Bench Mob’, Sydney Colson, Kierstan Bell and Cayla George all stepped up huge playing extended minutes in a 70-69 Aces win.
Since the Lakers won a deciding championship game without Kareem in 1980, no other basketball team has overcome the odds with so many key injuries. The Aces magic during the season and championship series came from WNBA Defensive Player of the Year A’ja Wilson.
Although Wilson won Finals MVP, she showed she got robbed of being the regular season MVP (yeah, we said it!). Hey, Michael Jordan didn’t win the MVP every year, and A’ja Wilson is getting the same treatment from the MVP voters.
Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young did what they usually do, played great ball, and got the job done with Wilson and other contributors.
What’s Next for the Aces?
Looking to next year, the competition will only get more challenging as more fantastic college players enter the WNBA. We expect the league’s popularity to continue to grow and grow because of the increasing talent. And, we expect the Aces will be the odds-on favorites to go back-to-back-to-back.
In the words of Sydney Colson to all the other teams out there, “Night, night.”
